Secret Keyhole

Rome’s most charming view is from Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta on Aventine Hill. To find it, go to the left of the church of Santa Sabina and to the end of the piazza; look through the keyhole of the door the Priory of the Knights of Malta. Through this tiny hole you will see a secret garden and an avenue of trees framing…but let’s not spoil the surprise: see for yourself.

Roman Specialities

Roman favorites include pasta like bucatini all’amatriciana (tomato sauce, bacon and chilli peppers); spaghetti alla carbonara (egg, bacon, pepper and cheese). The bestknown main course is saltimbocca alla romana (veal scallops with ham and sage, cooked in wine and butter).

Rome and the water

More than 50 of Rome’s fountains are fed by the waters of the Aqua Virgo, a source that the Romans first brought into the city in 19BC. It flows from the countryside outside the city, and feeds the Barcaccia fountain at the foot of the Spanish Steps, before supplying many others, including the most famous of them all, the Trevi Fountain.

Shopping in Rome

Rome was once the market place of an empire that embraces much of the known world. Nowadays it has a place in the shopping firmament. Most of the great Italian and European fashion houses have shops in the city: Gucci, Prada, Armani are all here, in Via dei Condotti. But, you will find shoes, clothes and good-quality bags, gloves and other leatherwear in Via nazionale, Via del Tritone e Via del Corso.

Rome by night

After dark the heat of a summer day gives way to balmy evenings and life takes to the streets. Bars and cafés fill with Romans. The Pantheon and Colosseum are spectacular under floodlights and romantic under moonlight.
